How much electricity does it take to power Los Angeles? Lots, I’d imagine. Standing on Artesia Blvd. in Torrance, California, listening to the power lines hum so loud it seemed to drown out the three lanes of traffic, I could have sworn all the electricity in LA was flowing right through those lines. Everyone called me Squabz. I don’t know where or how that started, but it stuck. And they called my cousin Eddie “Meatballs.” That, from what I was told, started because my Tata would say “Eddie Spaghetti”, and that would naturally lead any person with half a brain to the nickname “meatballs.” I can still hear my cousin yelling “Squabz!” when I’d run in the front door of my Nana Dorothy’s house, and I’d return the call with a shout of “meatballs” in my best baritone voice.
